Vignoble les Hauts de Talmont sur Gironde

The Les Hauts de Talmont vineyards is located in Charente-maritime, 15 kilometers south of Royan, in the commune of Talmont-sur-Gironde, one of the 154 most beautiful villages in France.
The site is unique. From the top of its white chalk cliff lined with carrelets (fishing huts), the vineyards overlooks the silty waters of the Gironde estuary and the sublime Sainte-Radegonde church, a masterpiece of Saintonge Romanesque art.

Michel Guillard

The father of the project, he was the creator and editor, alongside Jean-Paul Kauffmann, of the magazine L’Amateur de Bordeaux. A renowned photographer of vineyard landscapes, about which he has written and produced a travelling exhibition, he has also devoted himself, out of passion, to the application for the Champagne wine region to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He directs the ‘Inventaire des territoires’ collection and has published an encyclopaedia of Cognac.

He's therefore naturally responsible for contacts with the wine world : journalists, oenologists, sommeliers and restaurateurs.

Lionel Gardrat

A talented young winegrower, regularly recognised in competitions for his Charente wines, particularly his whites. He was the natural choice to be the winegrower and winemaker for this new estate, which is mainly dedicated to Colombard and Merlot, two grape varieties he knows well, having grown them for years on his own estate near Cozes.

He has the key responsibility of managing the vineyard and ageing these wines in the new cellar on the Caillaud cliff, near Talmont.

Soil

The soil is clay-limestone, with a vein of Upper Campanian limestone, dating from the last period of the Mesozoic era (70 to 65 million years ago), when dinosaurs and ammonites became extinct. The presence of this limestone helps to retain excess water from rainfall and release it to the vines during periods of high heat.

Colombard

Native to southwestern France, probably a cross between Chenin blanc and Gouais, it's one of the oldest grape varieties in the Charente region. Formerly used to make distillation wines for Cognac production, it was marginalised after the phylloxera crisis. Replaced by Ugni blanc, it began a new career abroad, where it's growing in popularity : it's the second most widely planted white grape variety in California after Chardonnay, second after Chenin in South Africa, and is also found in Australia. This is why we wanted to rediscover it in its country of origin.
Resistant and productive, it produces dry, fine and fruity white wines with aromas of citrus (grapefruit, lemon) and exotic fruits.
